A workshop on the strategic direction to enhance and develop the midwifery profession in the Asian region concluded in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, with the participation of Yemen.
The workshop discussed over three days the aspects related to enhancing and developing midwifery in the Asian region, the available opportunities and challenges, as well as initiatives in the field of midwifery, and how to enhance regional and international cooperation to achieve a common vision for developing this profession.
The discussions also focused on priorities consistent with global trends in midwifery, and identifying the main areas that should be focused on within the priorities of the Asian Midwifery Alliance in line with its mission and strategic goals.
The workshop recommended the rapid preparation of a five-year strategic plan, and the development of a map of future directions and actions for the Asian Alliance, stressing the importance of the role of international midwifery leaders in preparing a draft strategy for mobilizing the resources necessary to implement the specified goals.
At the end of the workshop, the Chairperson of the Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean – President of the Yemeni Midwives Association, Sabah Al-Dhafri, considered that the outcomes of the consultative meeting of Asian midwifery leaders establish a clear vision that ensures the provision of strategic directions based on the needs of member states, and enhancing the role of midwives in providing high-quality health services to mothers and children. She pointed out the challenges facing the promotion of the midwifery profession in Yemen as a result of the difficult circumstances it is going through, and its impact on the health system and improving the quality of obstetric care, and providing free services for mothers and newborns..
